    Sadly as much as it's a cool thing in itself.....tat's just it, the artwork produced is some of the most crap art man. Anything that can be done here dan b produced by conventional means or just pencil/ink on paper though as usual with the artwork it's about how it can be explained more than anything. I have Asperger's I feel like we would make great art judges. Blunt af. Too blunt perhaps 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

    My personal preference is to allow oil based intaglio inks to air dry even if the paper curls, then later re-wet the paper and flatten between blotters. This prevents wet printing ink transferring to overlaying blotters and also prevents any smudging of a fresh print before the ink has dried.

    I have 12 lithographs from the 1881 Smithsonian. Zuni and Hopi stuff. I'm looking at some Zuni sashes with red, black, white, green, blue, gray colors. when I look at them under X30 loupe in one example I see fine little black dots inside of other colors of red and black and white forming a solid diamond around smaller diamonds. those colors are smooth and continuous. The little black dots must be about .002-004". The attention to detail is wonderful. Were separate stones used for each color?

    What is the purpose of the black "oilier stiff printing ink" that's put on multiple times during 3:29 - 4:28 only to be then washed off again and replaced with the "stiff coloured ink". Couldn't you have just put the coloured ink on at 3:29? I think what's happening in this video is that you're actually showing multiple different techniques (to make either a black-ink print, or a coloured-ink print ), but the narrator simply forgot to say so in the video. AFAIK the reality is that the video is just showing the same inking process again if you'd *instead* used a different colour ink, and you don't really do both, you do *either* 3:29 - 4:28 *or* you do 4:28 - 5:11

    • @herracaligari

      The consistency of the roll-up ink helps establish the image better than the final printing ink used. It's also slow drying or "non-drying" as opposed to the final printing ink. The ink is usually called process black, roll up black or non-drying black.

    A lot of people seem to miss the point of this demo.i have witnessed many slick and skilful demonstrations .i too can do that .i have been doing Mokuhanga for 20 years plus .the whole point was not to make a demo like a traditional Japanese printer.the whole demo was improvised on the spot .it is just a technique .as simple or as complex as you care to make it .Yes occasionaly i use kento registration .Yes there are many more complex ways of registering and printing and cutting .it does not have to look like a 1920s japanese woodcut ...that is a million miles from what i aspire to.This is a wonderful medium which has great potential in the contemporary world we live in .I have met and admired David Bull work and ethos .Equaly he can,and does, respect and enjoy how i make my works and what my aspirations are .Thank goodness for people like David Bull ,however i am trying to demystify this medium.It is cutting tools ,water ,wood ,pigments ,paper and a simple hand burnishing tool.It has a great creative potential.i suggest you research further .There are many many ways of approaching this medium and infact it is a brave person who stands infront of a camera and produces a couple of prints from scratch .You may not like them, you may not like the approach but you are wrong in assuming David Bull would be shocked or horrified.I am interested in how this ancient and beautiful medium can be pushed into a contemporary form of expression .Dont be fooled by something looking easy to do,neither dont be fooled by something looking difficult.

    I first did this process when I was in printmaking at junior college (this junior college had a slightly more advanced art department than was typical for the time...1967!!). It's a time consuming, physical process, but the end result can be worth it. After working with the lithography I went on to work as a machinist, and then spent most of my life working as a carpenter. Go figure!!!

  • @hersailor
    @hersailor 6 лет назад

    As a person well qualified to say so, I throw in my two bits here: Applause to a fine job of explaining the art and a method as well executed as the obvious practice must have been to produce it. Apart from that, there are variations to the products, materials and techniques. But I am confident that artists will find some of their own ways. I engrave and dry point and often sand the burr off (without scratches) and have concise lines that last as long as those etched. Acid etching has the characteristic of more fluid movement like those associated with the organic. While hand methods such as dry point and the burin cut the metal with more labor and risk of a slip and require serious skill to master any curve. Such methods as stipple, grits of sand paper and even electric engravers are employed but less traditional than acid tints. I thank you for a fine demonstration and with all due respect to a master of this art.
